Who doesn’t serve baked beans for the 4th of July? This recipe passed down through the generations is sure to please a crowd! Enjoy!!

2 c navy beans
1½ t salt
1 small onion, minced
4 T molasses
1 t dry mustard
4 T. catsup
¼ lb. salt pork OR 4 slices of bacon

Soak the beans overnight in cold water. The next day, drain them and add 1½ qts. of fresh water. Add the onion and cook slowly until skins burst. Drain the liquid and save it. Mix together the molasses, seasoning and catsup with 1 cup of the liquid. Put half the salt pork (or bacon) in a baking dish, add the beans and top with the rest of the pork (or bacon). Pour molasses mixture over beans, add more liquid to cover. Bake covered for five hours in at 300 degrees. Uncover for the last 30 minutes. Add water if necessary during baking.
