One of the things I love most about living in Dutch Country is the scrumptious, mouth-watering Shoo-Fly Pie the Amish and Mennonites so frequently bake.  The pie melts in your mouth with just the right blend of molasses, ginger, cinnamon, cloves, and nutmeg.  If you want to treat your family to a delightful dessert, try this recipe.  They will love it!

Crumb Part:
1/4 c shortening
1 1/2 c flour
1 c brown sugar
Mix together into crumbs.
Liquid Part:
3/4 t. baking soda
1/2 t. nutmeg
A dash of ginger, cinnamon, and cloves
1/4 t. salt
3/4 c. molasses
1/4 c hot water
1 pie shell

Mix together well all the ingredients for the liquid part and pour into an unbaked pie shell.  Sprinkle crumbs on top.  Bake in a preheated oven at 450 degrees for 15 minutes, then turn the oven down to 350 degrees and bake an additional 20 minutes.

  1. I am from PA and I miss the Shoo Fly Pie my mom would make me. Think I will make one!

But you can’t just use regular Molasses.. Kings Syrup is the closest you can get to the way the amish make it..
